Beginning in the early 1980s in Spanish Town Jamaica, dancehall music emerged as a reaction to the popularity of roots reggae. First, it was marked by MCs toasting to dub reggae, rapidly evolving into a signature blend of digital sounds, rhythmic beats, and frequently raw lyrics.
